Q. What are little greens?
A. Litttle greens are otherwise known as microgreens, little edible plants bursting with flavour and nutrition grown from the seeds of vegetables and herbs. They are older than a sprout (root, seed and shoots) but younger than a full-grown plant. They are approximately 3 to 6cm and harvested (picked) just after the very young first true leaves appear. The stem, cotyledons (seed leaves) and the first set of true leaves are all edible.
They are grown from the same seeds to grow full-size plants, however some varieties are more suited to be grown as a sprout or microgreen. We are also using a lot more seeds planted closely together.
Q. What are the benefits of little greens?
- Studies have shown that many microgreens often contain up to 40 times more nutrients than full-grown plants.
- Kids are more likely to try and eat new foods they have nurtured and grown themselves.
- They are the perfect accompaniment to a well-balanced diet and can be enjoyed all year round by all the family.
- They are a great introduction for kids into gardening. They’re perfect for those with limited time and can be grown indoors in a place as simple as a window sill or the kitchen bench, even in the kid’s room.
Q. What kind of seeds do you sell?
A. Here at Seeds for Tomorrow we have a selection of different seeds to begin your wonderful microgreen journey. We have chosen some of the easiest and fastest growing seeds to help make your little greens journey a success. Seeds are all untreated and chemical free.

Q. What is Cocopeat?
A. Cocopeat is a 100% sustainable, totally natural growing medium derived from the inner husk of the coconut. It is an ideal growing medium for our little greens as it is known for it’s fabulous ability to hold water, promote strong root growth and release unused stored minerals when needed. There is no need to add anything to the Cocopeat except a little sprinkling of water and love.
Q. Do I need to treat the little green seeds before planting?
A. Soaking the little greens seeds before planting can help them germinate but it is not essential. Check your individual little greens seed packet for any suggested soaking times.
Q. How often do I need to water my little greens?
A. Remember to give your little greens lots of love and gentle watering every day. Then watch in wonder as your little seeds grow a little more each day. Make sure not to overwater as this can lead to mould.
Q. How do I tell the difference between mould and root hairs?
A. Root hairs are white and fluffy and often mistaken for mould and appear after the initial few days of germination. You will notice that root hairs will shrink back into the little greens if sprinkled with a little water mould on the other hand looks like a cob web spreading itself across the seeds.
Q. What happens if I get mould?
A. Mould is rare but can happen occasionally, unfortunately if mould begins to appear you will need to start the process again pot and all.
Q. How long does it take my little greens to grow?
A. With a little nurturing and love your little greens will be around 3-6cm tall and ready to harvest (cut) in as little as 7-14 days.
Q. Will my little greens re-grow after harvesting?
A. Generally not as a microgreen! However I have had pea shoots grow another round and all manner of herb and vegetables pop up in the garden/compost.

Q. How often do I water my little herb pot?
A. During these early days it is best to keep a daily watch over on how your little herb seeds are going. If you notice the pot starting to turn light brown and feel dry its definitely time for a little watering love.
Q. When can I expect to see a little herb life?
A. It’s really dependant on what seeds, where you live, what time of year. However, I have found for basil and parsley I start to see life within a few weeks. Chives are usually slower to pop their heads up.
Q. When do I plant my little pot?
A. After you have seen life your seedlings will be ready to plant in approximately 2-3 weeks, by now they should be growing nice and strong . There is no need to take the seedlings out of the pot simply pop it into your herb patch or container under the soil level and water. I find depending on how many seeds had been growing as they get a little stronger and bigger you may need to separate them in another few weeks.
Q. What do I need to know about caring for Basil?
A. Basil is an annual warm weather herb and really doesn’t like the cooler months. It prefers to be in a sunny position for up to 6 hours per day. When planting your little pot make sure it is well drained. Water when the soil is dry to touch. Harvest from the top down cutting just above another pair of leaves this will ensure your plant will continue to flourish.
Q. What do I need to know about caring for Chives?
A. Chives are a perennial herb that love to be planted in the springtime but can be planted as late as March. They love full sun but these little herbs will grow almost anywhere. When harvesting chives make sure to cut right down at the base. They grow best when they are in a well drained soil and kept hydrated.
Q. What do I need to know about caring for Parsley?
A. Parsley is a biennial herb meaning that it can last up to two years. It loves to be planted in the Autumn but can still be planted in springtime. It prefers to be in a sunny to partial sun position. When planting your little pot make sure if it is going in a well drained container that it is 20 -25cm wide. Parsley does like a drink of water often and will let you know by wilting, just make sure not to leave the roots sitting in water as this can lead to yellowing of leaves and root rot. When it’s harvest time parsley prefers to be picked like a leafy green. Trim the outer more mature leaves and stems allowing the younger growth time to mature.
